I've about had it with this asshole

And I don't mean Ivor, although I've about had it with him too. I mean The Poor Man. Look, you dumb motherfucker: people have every right to live where they want and how they want. They have a right to demand that their infrastructure be competently built and safe. The fact that a bunch of fuckups refuses to build that infrastructure correctly does not mean that the population of New Orleans should shrug and pack up their lives, their histories, their culture, and just move away. The people of New Orleans, believe it or not, are aware of the dangers and the lies and the broken promises and do not need you to go to bat for them against the EVIL CORPS OF ENGINEERS who tell the poor ignorant crackers and undereducated Negroes that their homes are safe. They do not need your condescending lectures. We may be southern, but you know what? WE KNOW THEY'RE NOT SAFE. WE ARE FIGHTING TO MAKE THEM SAFE. WE READ NEWSPAPERS AND EVERYTHING. The people of New Orleans WANT THEIR HOMES BACK. They WANT THE PROMISES KEPT. You want to back down? You want to give up in the face of government incompetence and indifference? Fine. Give up. Go home. And take your own advice and shut the fuck up. This is what the state of Louisiana reaps after years of being the nation's clown, of reveling in our outsiderness, in encouraging the image of corruption and dissolution and decadence. The rest of the country does not take us seriously. They do not think we can make our own decisions. They feel the need to protect us from ourselves, after decades of ignoring us and our very real needs. It's really our fault, when you think about it: we were the party state, barefoot and drunk and brazen in our graft and vice. And now, when we cry for help, all we get is YOU STUPID FUCKERS. DON'T LIVE THERE. Well. We're going to live here. You Yankees with real jobs and educations pay for Florida when the hurricanes hit every fucking year. You paid for New York when the towers went down. You pay for California after the quakes. And you're going to have to pony up and pay for us because even though we're southern and even though we're ignernt and even though we insist on living in a city that's been hanging on for three hundred years, we're still a part of your goddamned country. And we fucking well deserve it whether you think so or not. So SHUT UP and WRITE THE CHECK and quit worrying your RIGHTEOUS LITTLE HEAD. After all, we're only white trash and po niggers, and if the hurricanes come again and wipe us out, well, you can just write the check off on your taxes. No great loss. You arrogant gasbag condescending cocksucker.

That's all well and good, but next time don't bother to sugarcoat it.

(Btw: Great comic this week, as usual.)

You've made the point before, but you have a really good point about different parts of the country being rebuilt after natural disasters, and somehow New Orleans isn't worth it. I even got sucked into this myself, somewhat.

I just figured it's because our country is just so damn poor now, but I wonder what would've happened if it was a California earthquake instead.

Scott McClellan yesterday:

"Remember, there were really two storms that hit, the initial hurricane and then the flooding that came after it."

So it was just a coincidence that those two storms hit at the same time. Only one, and it would've been just another rainy or floody day.

Actually there were two storms. And though victims of Katrina got screwed, the Rita victims are having to do it without all the media sympathy and gov't attention.

However, I tend to think that the people and the local gov'ts have a role in the fact that you don't hear much from the Rita crowd, except from people like me who feel sorry for them. Many of them still have yet to see FEMA and/or relief. Yet, people who lived in New Orleans but didn't own anything there certainly all got their $3k debit cards with no problem at all.

Nick, it breaks my heart to see the point whiz by someone like that, so take a break, get some sugar into the brain so it can rev up a little, and reread the McClellan quote.

Rita was not anything McClellan was talking about.

I understand that Bob. My point is while people are still bitching and pointing fingers trying to blame everyone from Bush or Blanco to Haliburton or homosexuals for the Katrina disaster, there are people from "that other storm" who have yet to see any assistance at all.

I think a good point was made about CA and FL receiving help, though, especially gov't aid. In reality, CA and FL determine presidental elections and control much debate in this country, LA doesn't. Therefore, we will always get the raw deal in federal aid, no matter who is president, unless we can vote in a fellow coon-ass who won't forget his or her roots.

I'm a coon-ass and I know that a coon-ass can never, I repeat never be President. Too much piss and vinegar in coon-ass blood to rule a whole nation. Bombs would be flying, sex in the oval office that would make Clinton blush (him or her), And the shit would hit the fan daily.
